Losses from crypto hacks in September reached their highest level since the beginning of the year.

September was the costliest month of the year for the crypto industry in terms of funds lost to hacks. Analysts from PeckShield and CertiK estimated the total losses at approximately $767 million.

According to PeckShield’s calculations, 55 major incidents occurred during the month, with attackers stealing $766.5 million. CertiK recorded 97 attacks and estimated total losses at $768.4 million. Experts from both companies noted a sharp increase in losses compared to August. The bulk of the September losses stemmed from two incidents: an attack on the crypto exchange Bitget, which resulted in the theft of about $388 million, and a breach of the Liquid Network protocol, which accounted for approximately $320 million in losses. Liquid managed to recover about $270 million associated with the hack.

Analysts also highlighted attacks involving Safe Wallet and the platforms DCENT and Duelbits. Losses for these projects amounted to $7.8 million, $6 million, and $5.9 million, respectively. CertiK stated that September demonstrated how rapidly the scale of threats facing cryptocurrency services can shift.

Earlier, PeckShield analysts reported hacks targeting the AI-related crypto projects Fetch.ai and NuNet. An unknown attacker siphoned off assets worth approximately $2.01 million.
